Legacy Preservation and Intergenerational Wealth Continuity

A Flawless Course Across Generations

Architecture Designed for Generations

As wealth grows, the challenge extends beyond managing individual assets. The focus shifts to continuity of ownership, succession of control, alignment among family members, and the family’s preparedness for critical events.

Catamaran Family Office supports ultra-high-net-worth and high-net-worth families, principals, and their family offices in designing, assessing, and strengthening this architecture. We can act as a single coordination centre, an independent adviser, or a project partner to the client’s existing team.

Our role is not to promise absolute protection, but to reduce structural vulnerabilities, establish clear authority, and create mechanisms that remain effective across generations and changing circumstances.

Succession of Ownership and Control

We approach wealth transfer as the transition of several interconnected elements: legal ownership, economic interests, decision-making authority, access to information, and family responsibility.

Our work may include reviewing the family and asset landscape, modelling succession and inheritance scenarios, defining rules for heirs’ participation, enabling the gradual transfer of responsibilities during the founder’s lifetime, and preparing for incapacity or other critical events. Legal documents are prepared and validated by qualified advisers in the relevant jurisdictions. We ensure the overall architecture remains coherent and that individual solutions work together.

Ownership Architecture

We assess whether the existing ownership structure remains aligned with the family’s objectives, asset profile, geographic footprint, Sharia-related preferences where applicable, and intended allocation of control. Where necessary, we design a target model and coordinate its implementation.

Each solution is considered in light of applicable law, economic substance, tax and reporting obligations, administrative costs, banking compliance requirements, and resilience under changing circumstances.

The objective is not to create unnecessary complexity, but to remove unjustified dependencies, inconsistencies, and risks of fragmentation.

Confidentiality and Information Governance

We design an information framework based on need-to-know access, clear segregation of roles, and continuity arrangements for critical processes. This may include an information-flow map, access matrix, secure document repository, protocols for handling sensitive information, and emergency-access procedures.

Confidentiality is maintained within the limits of applicable law and does not replace mandatory disclosure to regulators, tax authorities, banks, courts, or other authorised parties.

International Coordination

We create a unified map of assets, ownership structures, tax residencies, obligations, powers, and professional advisers across the UAE and other relevant jurisdictions. We reconcile the positions of advisers in different countries, identify inconsistencies, and support the alignment of documents and implementation steps.

Legal, tax, Sharia, and investment opinions are provided by appropriately qualified specialists. Our role is to define the mandate accurately, integrate their conclusions, and oversee the implementation of the approved architecture.

Investment Governance

We help families formalise their investment principles, including acceptable risk, liquidity requirements, concentration limits, decision-making and review procedures, investment committee authority, and criteria for appointing and monitoring external managers.

Independent Diagnostics and Stress Testing

We conduct periodic reviews of the ownership and governance system, including the currency of key documents, allocation of control, dependence on key individuals and service providers, accessibility of critical information, and preparedness for significant events.

Scenario analysis may include a change of tax residency, family disagreement, death or incapacity of the principal, the departure of a key executive or service provider, a major transaction, or a material change in the composition of family assets.

The family receives a clear map of vulnerabilities, prioritised recommendations, and an agreed implementation plan.

Family Governance

We help formalise the relationship between ownership, the family, and professional management. Depending on the family’s requirements, this may include a family council, committees, an authority matrix, voting rules, principles for the participation of spouses and heirs, and mechanisms for resolving disagreements.

Family governance documents do not replace trust, family values, or personal relationships. They provide an agreed process for situations in which the interests, responsibilities, and expectations of family members may differ.

Philanthropy and Family Identity

We help integrate philanthropy into the family’s long-term vision and legacy. Together with specialist advisers, we develop a strategy, governance model, participation rules for family members, criteria for selecting initiatives, and approaches to measuring impact.

Particular attention is given to decision-making transparency, conflicts of interest, partner due diligence, regulatory requirements, and reputational risk.

What the Family Receives

  1. A unified map of ownership, control, and responsibility.
  2. Agreed rules for decision-making and the transfer of authority.
  3. A clear understanding of key vulnerabilities and the priorities for addressing them.
  4. A secure information framework accessible to authorised individuals.
  5. Documented preparedness for critical events and a framework for regularly reviewing the architecture as circumstances evolve.

Catamaran Family Office — preserving the integrity of family wealth, ensuring continuity of decision-making, and maintaining control across generations.

We can build the system from the ground up, independently assess an established family office, strengthen a specific function, or act as project coordinator during succession, restructuring, a change of residency, a major transaction, or another significant event.

Where the family already has an established professional team, we do not duplicate its responsibilities. We identify gaps between the legal, tax, investment, operational, and family governance frameworks, reconcile advisers’ positions, and provide the principal and authorised family members with a complete and coherent view of the family wealth architecture.
